The Dodecanese is a group of islands formed by 12 large islands and more than 150 smaller size islands. They are located near the southeast side of the Turkish coast.

The most well known islands among them are Rhodes or Rodos, Kos, Patmos, Kalimnos, Karpathos, Astipalaia, Symi, Tilos, Kasos and Kastelorizo. The Dodecanese group of islands are inhabited since the prehistoric period. They had been invaded by different races in different historic times: by the Romans, Venetians and Ottomans. Their architecture witnesses this historical fact. The most popular cruising destinations in the Dodecanese are:

Rhodes is a unique place, a large size island and it is the capital of Dodecanese. A lot of tourists visit the island every year to see the site of Colossus of Rhodes, one of the Seven Wonders of the World. They say that Rhodes was inhabited since 400 BC. Since her location was the " key" location between Europe, the middle East and Africa, there were always travellers stopping by. Trade was very much developped here in ancient times. The Colossus of Rhodes was built between 304 and 293 BC by the sculptor of Chares. It took him 12 years to accomplish this project. Unfortunatelly, an earthquake in 226 BC damaged parts of the city and the toppling of the Colossus. In the Roman years, Apostle Paul visited Rhodes. The town has four marinas. It is a cultural center with lots of interests. The town of Kos has a castle that was built in the 14th century. It is worth visiting the Plane Tree of Hyppocrates (the father of medicine. It is said that he was born in Kos). Also the Hyppocratic Museum and the Asklepion are places of great significance and worth to see. In Kos there are lots of restaurants, shops and bars. There is a little street in town, called the "barstreet". Kalymnos is an island located between Kos and Leros, in the southeastern Aegean. It is one of the wealthier islands of the Dodecanese group. History says that Kalymnos was depended on Kos in ancient times. The island was invaded by the Turks, and later occuppied by Italians, untip appx the year of 1947. Kalymnos is also well known for the sponge diving. This was the main occupation of the local people for decades. It is still the main occupation for some people nowadays. The divers with their sponges brought wealth to the island, until the middle of 80s, when a disease struck the Mediterranean Sea and most of the sponges were damaged. Since then, the activity of sponge diving is smaller. Someone can discover beautiful places in Kalymnos. It is an ideal place for cruising a private charter yacht. Patmos is famous for its beauty, but also for its relegious values. The Monastery of Saint John the Theologian, and the Cave of Apocalypse are very famous religious places worth visiting.
